Summary:  The Environmental Specialist will support Spokand Galvanizing in developing and maintaining environmental procedures and processes to ensure compliance with all environmental and safety regulations

Essential Duties and Responsibilities: include the following. Other duties may be assigned as necessary to carry out essential job functions, including but not limited to:

  • Ensure that inspections by regulatory agencies are coordinated and that deficiencies are minimized and corrected.
  • Coordinate and communicate with GM on facility deficiencies and daily, weekly and monthly safety inspections/audits.
  • Maintain all logs and documentation associated with permits and regulatory requirements.
  • Evaluate personnel and workspace exposure, disposal and storage to hazardous chemicals, including identification, packaging, storage and shipping of chemical waste
  • Become familiar with spill containment procedures.
  • Investigate and resolve environmental incidents and complaints
  • Support EZ Loader facilities with environmental requirements
  • Attend seminars/workshops that discuss new regulations and safe practices.

Qualifications: To perform this job successfully, and individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily.  The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required.

Education and/or Experience:  High School diploma or General Education Degree (GED); or 3-5 years related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.Ability to read, write and perform basic mathematical calculations. 

  • Experience and Knowledge with WA State Department of Ecology Dangerous Waste Regulation preferred
  • Ability to effectively organize and manage multiple projects and programs in a fast-pace environment and demonstrate effective prioritization and implementation skills
  • Problem-solving ability
  • Ability to maintain working relationships with regulation agencies
  • Ability to be proactive on all safety, environmental and health guidelines.
  • Strong communication skills with the ability to speak in group settings

 

Language:  Ability to read and comprehend simple instructions, short correspondence, and memos.  Ability to write simple correspondence.  Ability to effectively present information in one-on-one and small group situations to customers, clients, and other employees of the organization.

Mathematical Skills:  Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals.  Ability to compute rate, ratio, and percent and to draw and interpret bar graphs.  Ability to read and comprehend measuring tools such as a tape measure.

Reasoning Ability:  Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out detailed but uninvolved written or oral instructions.  Ability to deal with problems involving a few concrete variables in standardized situations.

Other Qualifications:  Must be willing to learn and practice continuous improvement techniques.  The ability to participate and lead in a team-oriented environment with the willingness to assist and train others.  Demonstrate safe behavior and support department/plant safety goals in a continuous improvement process.  Able to work a flexible schedule, including overtime, weekends before and after schedule as needed.  Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals.  The ability to write routine reports and correspondence, as well as speak effectively before groups of customers or employees of the organization.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to stand.  The employee is frequently required to walk; use hands to finger, handle, or feel; reach with hands and arms and talk or hear. The employee is occasionally required to sit; climb or balance and stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl.  The employee must frequently lift and/or move up to 75 pounds.  Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision and ability to adjust focus.
