Job Description

The Environmental Health & Safety Specialist (EHSS) develops, administers and trains all site personnel on strategic and site-specific tactical safety plans that conform to GM-WTC and ARAMARK policies and standards and all applicable codes, regulations and laws. The EHSS engages with GM-WTC, UAW and ARAMARK corporate Environmental Health & Safety to achieve the highest possible safety records for all services within the statement of work.
The EHSS conducts site inspections, risk assessments and trend analyses, and prepares risk mitigation plans, including the implementation of 5S workplace organization in all ARAMARK workplaces, shops, cribs, cabinets. The EHSS compiles curricula and resources for mandatory and enhanced training for all employees, coordinating records with UAW safety administrators.
The EHSS trains ARAMARK Directors, Managers and Supervisors to investigate safety incidents and events, perform root cause analyses, and devises permanent corrective action plans for Safety Incident Reports. The EHSS oversees the preparation of these reports and monitors implementation of corrective action plans.
The EHS compiles safety budgets and tracks expenditures and variances, and Key Performance Indicators

Job Responsibilities

  • Know and uphold ARAMARK’s policies, procedures and Service Agreement with GM-WTC to allow customers and tenants to focus on their core business. Take ownership of campus wide facilities, infrastructure and grounds, and drive continuous improvement initiatives to enhance facility performance, operating effectiveness and cost efficiency.
  • Research site-wide safety incident history for facility operations staff and contractors, and facility-related incidents and injuries to the site’s general population. Engage Facility Director, GM-WTC FAM, safety management, UAW and others to develop local level goals and objectives into an annual plan to eliminate hazards, reduce risks, and improve safety compliance and consciousness.
  • Develop timelines and guide cross functional teams to manage and implement the ARAMARK EH&S Programs. Communicate status of goals, plans and programs to all levels of the local organization.
  • Participate in setting standards for engineering controls, administrative controls, and personal protective equipment (PPE) and administer training and enforce compliance for all employees.
  • Engage with Managers and Supervisors to conduct daily safety talks, observe and correct non-compliances (especially with PPE), eliminate hazards to passers-by, prioritize work area safety and clean-up.
  • Prioritize hazardous operations and engage with Managers, Supervisors, Work Zone Schedulers, Capacity Assurance Coordinators and others to review pre-task safety plans (in Maximo) and work area compliance.
  • Review contractors’ safety histories (EMR), plans, training and records, inspect/tour for compliance, verify insurance coverage and timely renewals. Where necessary, align ARAMARK’s safety resources to either abet contractors’ genuine improvement initiatives, or replace them with proven performers.
  • Attend safety meetings on request, and support remedial action plans or progressive discipline for safety violations, up to and including termination.
  • Compile daily, weekly, monthly and YTD safety reports. Track Key Performance Indicators (KPI’s) for safety incidents (near-miss, recordable, lost-time), evaluate trends, conditions and opportunities and initiate process improvements by staff and contractors.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Environmental Health, Human Resources, Industrial Engineering, Business or related curriculum or equivalent experience. Certification by recognized professional bodies preferred (Board of Safety Professionals.) Coursework indicating advanced professional development.
  • Minimum of 3-5 years of relevant experience as Safety Manager or assistant in large facilities, maintenance, construction or manufacturing organization.
  • Administrative experience related to safety management for facility operations management, including budgeting, training, scheduling, auditing, reporting.
  • Expertise in environmental health and safety codes, regulations, laws, best practices applicable to facility operations and maintenance in an engineering/research or manufacturing environment.
  • Knowledge and skill sets to rapidly grasp:
    • GM and WTC safety processes, systems, priorities and values. Intimate knowledge of General Motors’ safety culture and protocols.
    • Lean, sustainable quality processes: QNPM, BPD, Kaizen (Go-Fast), 5S. The ability to design, articulate, plan, communicate, implement, monitor and refine (PDCA) continuous improvement.
    • Computer skills in IWMS/CMMS experience, MS Office suite including project management software, and utilization of mobile / handheld technology.
  •  Adaptability to work in a diverse environment, focus on customer satisfaction under high-stress conditions, and organize an effective response to day-to-day requirements, and one-of-a-kind extremes.
  • Communications skills that invite credibility, loyalty, trust and commitment among key stakeholders in operations, critical facilities, events, and line supervisors. Particular concerns are:
    • LFMR and UAW relationships, aligning customer requirements with resources and schedules.
    • Workforce / contractor direction, productivity, quality and commitment.
    • Administrative coordination, regarding job assignments, productivity, labor relations, logistics etc.
    • Planning, monitoring and reporting to drive continuous improvement, optimize reliability and value.
