Graduate Intern – Commercial Power Market Fundamentals & AI/ML

Exus is a next-generation Independent Power Producer that develops, owns, and operates renewable energy assets (Wind, Solar and Battery Storage) while providing world class asset management services for over 5 GW of renewable energy assets to third parties.  Exus has a proven track record of constructing and commercializing renewable energy assets and they are building their portfolio by acquiring and building utility-scale renewables projects and guiding those still in development through to full operational status. As part of Exus’ asset management business, the firm undertakes full technical and commercial management of renewable energy portfolios worldwide. Exus draws on its wide-ranging expertise to optimize technical performance, reduce financial risk, and ensure long-term revenue certainty for their own and their clients’ renewable energy assets.
 
We are looking for a graduate-level Commercial Intern for our Summer 2025 intern program out of our Pittsburgh, PA office. This is a paid full-time position. Anticipated duration will be 8-10 weeks (June through August 2025). This position has the potential to transition into a full-time role upon graduation.

This is an ideal opportunity for students interested in power markets, renewable energy, and AI/ML applications to help us analyze long-term market trends, transmission capacity, and renewable energy development opportunities. This internship is a unique opportunity to gain real-world experience at the intersection of power markets, renewable energy, and AI/ML analytics. Your work will contribute to long-term energy planning and investment strategies, helping to drive the transition to a cleaner, more efficient power market.
 
What You’ll Do:
Power Market & Transmission Analysis
  • Identify the most powerful AI tools for power markets analysis
  • Leverage AI to:
    • Research electricity demand growth, including data centers, green hydrogen, and long-term energy planning (IRPs).
    • Analyze renewable energy penetration, thermal plant retirements, and evolving fuel mix trends.
    • Support the Development team in assessing interconnection queues, transmission constraints, and siting challenges.
    • Examine PPA pricing, market liquidity, locational marginal prices (LMPs), and energy policy incentives.
    • Work with the transmission team to understand grid capacity constraints and future infrastructure needs.
AI/ML & Data Analytics
  • Assist in developing AI/ML models for long-term power market forecasting and renewable integration.
  • Use data analytics to improve energy system modeling and decision-making tools.
  • Help integrate AI/ML-driven insights into internal dashboards and market reports.
  • Work with large datasets (e.g., interconnection queues, market prices, regulatory data) to identify key trends.
  • Present findings in reports and presentations to internal teams.
 Role Requirements:
  • Graduate students (MS or PhD) in Power Systems, Renewable Energy, Electrical Engineering, AI/ML, Data Science, Advanced Analytics, Applied Mathematics or Physics.
  • Prior experience with AI/ML and data analytics (expertise not required).
  • Basic understanding of power markets, renewable energy, and grid operations.
  • Programming skills (Python, R, SQL, or MATLAB) for data analysis.
  • Willing to be in Pittsburgh, PA for the duration of the intern program.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to work independently and communicate insights effectively.
  • Familiarity with Power BI or willingness to learn.
