The Opportunity

The Pembina Institute is a non-partisan think tank that advocates for strong, effective policies to support Canada’s clean energy transition. Through research, consulting and convening, we employ highly collaborative approaches to reduce the environmental impacts of energy production and use. This is a pivotal moment and it’s all hands-on deck here. We’re searching for a Senior Director, Communities and Decarbonization to play an instrumental role overseeing strategic planning and driving policy development to increase the Pembina Institute’s regional and national influence.

The Position

Reporting to the Deputy Executive Director, this senior leadership position is focused on achieving the Pembina Institute’s organizational objective to implement policies that will result in the decarbonization of Canada’s transportation and building sectors in line with Canada’s 2030 and 2050 emissions reduction targets, and that will help Canada discover the co-benefits of climate action in advancing social equity and preparing its workforce in its energy transition. This position directly supervises the directors of the Buildings, Transportation, and Equitable Transition programs and the group’s communication professionals.

The Candidate Profile

You’ll act both from a strategic and tactical lens, using your leadership expertise, skills and experience to guide a team of experts and expand the Pembina Institute’s national and regional reach. You’re positive and collaborative, with a record of building rapport, solving problems and advancing the conversation related to decarbonization within Canadian communities. Key Responsibilities

Manage the group’s annual program and budget while working in close collaboration with Director of Strategic Partnerships to ensure sufficient revenue is secured.
Develop and implement coordinated relationship strategies in all relevant government jurisdictions and with key influencers.
Work closely with the Senior Director of Industrial Decarbonization to ensure research and advocacy messages are aligned and internal resources are optimized.
Serve as a primary media spokesperson and government relations lead for the group or delegate to others as appropriate.
Lead group strategic planning and implementation.
Provide quality control and final signoff on all external-facing group publications and deliverables.
Oversee process for recruiting and appraising employees in the group.
Oversee staff development, mentorship, and succession planning.

Key Qualifications

Minimum 10 years of increasing experience in fields of environmental/climate/energy policy
Undergraduate degree in related field (graduate degree preferred). An equivalent combination of education and experience, which provides proficiency in the areas of responsibility listed above, may be substituted for the above education and experience requirements.
A minimum of five years of supervisory experience with multiple direct reports
Grant management and fundraising experience.
Government relations planning and implementation experience.
Direct experience leading and sponsoring internal change management initiatives.

Compensation

Salary is commensurate with experience. The hiring range for the position is $115,000 to $130,000 with a position maximum of $151,497 gained with increased skill and experience in the role.
