Position Description

El Puente seeks an experienced School Outreach Coordinator who oversees student engagement, attendance, & coordinates service learning projects. They also coordinate parent/adult activities, especially around the organization's growing hub of curriculum specifically centered around social and environmental justice.

This position reports directly to the Green Light District (GLD) Program Director, and works closely with the Green Light District team, as well as the Global Justice Institute (GJI). The ideal candidate will thrive in a fast-paced, flexible, team-oriented environment, and is motivated by challenges. They will be able to manage multiple priorities and create systems to improve the organization's curriculum development and facilitation process.

They will be able to build relationships and create collaborations, and they have passion for social justice and will understand how movement and community building work take place through liberatory, meaningful interactions and co-learning with youth members and their families.

Organizing in North Brooklyn and Puerto Rico, El Puente is at the forefront of community & youth development, and initiates/impacts social policy locally and nationally. As a staff member of El Puente, the School Outreach Coordinator is expected to uphold and work within the mission, philosophy and principles of the organization.

Responsibilities

Environmental Justice Curriculum Promotion:

Develop strategies to promote the adoption and implementation of environmental justice curriculum within schools.
Create compelling outreach materials, including brochures, presentations, and website content, to raise awareness about the curriculum.
Organize and facilitate informational sessions and workshops for educators, administrators, and community stakeholders.

Collaboration across El Puente and partner sites (schools)

Communicate with and collaborate with Directors, Coordinators, and facilitators across centers on adaptation and implementation at their leadership sites
Facilitation and implementation of curriculum across El Puente centers with members of varying ages
Communicate with partner sites, particularly nearby schools, and build relationships with educators and teachers
Collaborate with educators at nearby schools to adapt environmental justice lessons plans within their structure
Build relationships with school districts, individual schools, and relevant educational organizations to foster partnerships.
Collaborate with school administrators and teachers to understand their needs and tailor curriculum resources accordingly.
Work closely with school personnel to integrate environmental justice curriculum into existing lesson plans and programs.

Training and Professional Development:

Provide training sessions and professional development workshops for educators on implementing the environmental justice curriculum.
Support teachers in adapting and integrating curriculum materials into their classrooms, ensuring alignment with educational standards.
Offer ongoing support and guidance to educators, addressing questions, challenges, and providing resources.

Student/Member Engagement:

Develop strategies to engage students in environmental justice education and action.
Organize student-led initiatives, such as environmental clubs, projects, and events, to raise awareness and promote environmental justice within the school community.
Facilitate student workshops, presentations, and interactive activities to enhance understanding and engagement.

Program Evaluation and Assessment:

Collect feedback and evaluate the effectiveness of the environmental justice curriculum implementation.
Conduct surveys, interviews, and observations to assess the impact of the curriculum on students, teachers, and the overall school community.
Identify areas for improvement and provide recommendations for curriculum enhancements and updates.

Logistics, Materials, and IT Tools

Work closely with GLD team on set-up of El Puente spaces for lessons,
Work closely with educators within schools on necessary tech set-up for lessons,
Coordinate printed materials for lessons

Qualifications

Qualities of the Successful Candidate:

Leadership and patience marked by the ability to balance competing interests and ideas among essential constituencies including other staff and educators

Comfortable working within and for Latino/a/@/x communities

Experience:

Strong knowledge and understanding of environmental justice principles, issues, and educational practices.
Experience in educational outreach, program coordination, or school engagement.
Excellent communication and presentation skills, with the ability to effectively engage with educators, administrators, and students.
Familiarity with educational systems, standards, and curriculum development processes.
Passion for environmental justice and a commitment to fostering equity and inclusivity in education.
Strong organizational and project management skills to effectively coordinate outreach efforts.
Ability to build relationships and collaborate with diverse stakeholders, including school personnel and community organizations.
Experience in delivering training sessions or workshops for educators is a plus.
Familiarity with data collection and evaluation methods for educational programs.
Experience in project management and the skill of working with others to attain development goals
