INTRODUCTION: CONTEXT AND MISSION

The Cleveland Metropolitan School District (CMSD) serves approximately 37,000 students in 100+ schools. Over the past several years, the Greater Cleveland community has united behind the collective goal of ensuring every child in Cleveland attends a high-quality school and every neighborhood has a multitude of great schools from which families can choose. The Cleveland Plan defines CMSD’s approach to the reinvention of public education and holds our community accountable for the success of Cleveland’s schoolchildren. The Cleveland Plan is supported by Ohio House Bill 525, which provides much-needed flexibility and autonomy for the district and its schools. Our schools have autonomy over human and financial resources in exchange for accountability for

performance. The principal has primary responsibility and accountability for establishing his or her school as a high-quality, high-expectations academic center with a focus on personalized instruction, professional support for teachers, and school-wide practices that lead to measurable results.

The Cleveland Metropolitan School District has developed standards of excellence that the district applies to all parts of the organization inclusive of schools, principals, school leadership teams, networks, and central office. Alignment between Standards of Excellence (SoE) and the district’s Theory of Action helps ensure that principals are able to focus on scholar achievement and that central office supports are timely and effective.

The principal is both the administrative and instructional leader for the high school. He or she will be responsible for the school’s academic program, maintaining a top-flight faculty, working closely with corporate and higher education partners, establishing positive relations with parents and guardians, and providing energetic leadership to the entire school community. A commitment to the model of linking academic and experiential learning with strong mentoring programs for student success is essential. The search committee is especially interested in candidates who have been successful leaders in high performing urban schools or have experience with STEAM and other non-traditional project-based learning schools. This is a unique opportunity for urban educators to further build upon a foundation that powerfully engages its students in outstanding college and work environments.

Responsibilities

Hire, train and develop a high-quality faculty
Recruit enthusiastic and competent teachers with subject-area expertise and the ability to work with high school aged students
Support the ongoing development of teacher effectiveness that supports improvement, expects measurable results, and rewards achievement
Deliver professional development of all staff
Oversee the school’s academic and internship programs
Ensure comprehensive student support services that meet the needs of students’ academic developmental, physical and emotional needs
Lead faculty interdisciplinary work to align curriculum and use feedback and data for continuous improvement
Leadership and Management
Promote the mission of the school and represent the school to outside constituencies
Build a high performing team that produces measurable results
Be relentless on small details day-to-day while keeping an eye on the big picture
Encourage strong collaboration and make key decisions, be able to tell which situations call for which approach
Think and act strategically with all constituencies to build consensus, manage conflict and keep the focus on what is best for students

Qualifications

We are looking for amazing people who have diverse backgrounds and experiences, are inspired by our mission and are highly motivated to change our scholar’s lives. The successful candidate will bring a demonstrated track record of results in a high school leadership role, school startup or transformation and experience working with similar student populations

Strong record of helping students achieve academic success, primarily with minority and low-income students
Three to five years of K-12 classroom teaching experience.
Building or district level administrative experience strongly preferred.
Experience working effectively with urban schools, students and families, and outside partners with demonstrated exemplary results
Record of success in leading adults; prior experience with direct management and supervision
A passionate belief in the capacity of all children to learn and succeed and a sense of urgency about making that real for CMSD students
Possess an entrepreneurial spirit, be flexible, willing and able to play different roles at the school, and to go above and beyond to meet the varied and constant needs of CMSD scholars
Special training and/or experience with school turnaround highly desirable
