Besse Forest Products Group, headquartered in Gladstone, MI, was founded in 1966 and is one of the leading producers of hardwood lumber, veneer, and plywood in North America. Our operations include four sawmills, one lumber concentration yard, three veneer mills, one plywood plant, and employs over 350 people.

We are currently seeking an Environmental Specialist to join our growing team.

Primary Purpose of Position:

Provides technical environmental support internally for Besse Forest Products Group with the goal of implementing and maintaining continual compliance, determining cost-effective environmental solutions, developing long-term environmental strategies, and implementation of environmental management systems.

Essential Functions:

�   Initiates, prepares and reviews for approval prior to submittal to environmental regulatory agencies the following: permit applications, reports, compliance plans, emission information on a weekly, monthly and yearly basis.
�   Negotiates with regulatory agencies on environmental matters directly affecting Besse Forest Products Group, and coordinates comments to regulatory agencies on proposed environmental regulations.
�   Tracks federal, state, and local environmental regulations that potentially impact Besse Forest Products Group and advise on compliance requirements.
�   Participates in efforts to establish and maintain liaison with government agencies.
�   Initiates and investigates environmental, researches alternative solutions, conceives and implements solutions.
�   Prepares and effectively delivers environmental presentations as required to the Besse Group.
�   Coordinates and effectively delivers environmental training courses and assists in the development of such courses as required.
�   Conducts environmental assessments for development projects and to evaluate compliance with regulatory and company programs, and identify operations, work practices, or materials which may present an unacceptable environmental risk.
�   Evaluates results of assessment reports and provides recommendations to decrease incident rates, improve compliance position, increase operations or department efficiency or reduce costs.
�   Establishes environmental management systems
�   Assists in the collection of industrial hygiene samplings
�   Accompanies state and federal regulatory inspectors on environmental inspections or personal monitoring, following established inspection procedures
�   Completes routine visits to plants and assists as required/requested on matters of EHS compliance

Position Requirements:

Knowledge/Skills/Abilities:

�   This position typically requires a bachelor's degree in an environmental, or EHS major.
�   5 or more years of relevant work experience minimum
�   Broad training in a related field usually acquired through college education or work-related experience
�   Manufacturing setting (preferred) with a working knowledge of air and stormwater permits.

Certifications/Licenses/Other:

�   Working knowledge of the following areas: Practices, nomenclature, and procedures, specifically to the manufacturing industry
�   Complete understanding of the following areas: Environmental compliance regulations
�   Ability to apply independent evaluation, selection, and substantial adaptation and modification of standard environmental, health, and safety techniques, procedures, and criteria
