Overview: Association for Energy Affordability, Inc. (AEA) is a not-for-profit energy services and training organization with the mission to promote energy affordability through energy efficiency. AEA collaborates with various organizations and networks, including Weatherization Assistance Providers, utility and government agencies, and sustainable program organizations, to improve energy efficiency and sustainability in affordable multifamily buildings and small homes. AEA has over 25 years of industry experience.

Position Summary: AEA seeks to add a Junior Project Manager, Energy & Sustainability to its New Construction team which, provides energy and sustainability consulting to affordable housing developers and design teams in the New York City metropolitan area and beyond for both new and rehab buildings. The Junior Project Manager, Energy & Sustainability assists in providing technical expertise that promotes high energy performance with a vision toward green or sustainable building design. The candidate should have experience or knowledge in the sustainable building and/or building science field.

Under supervision, the Junior Project Manager, Energy & Sustainability is responsible for energy analysis, energy modeling, and program and project management of residential construction projects. The Junior Project Manager, Energy & Sustainability collaborates with a variety of internal and external parties towards developing and implementing energy efficient and sustainable projects. They evaluate multifamily building designs and make design recommendations to reduce energy consumption, minimize negative environmental impact, and promote healthy living.

Responsibilities include the following, and are subject to change as needed:

Engage in a collaborative process with development teams comprised of building developers, architects, engineers, and general contractors, in order to communicate and promote the benefits of high-performance, energy-efficient and sustainable design.
Work with project development teams to establish energy efficiency and sustainability goals for the project and ensure compliance with targeted programs, performance standards, codes, and local laws, including requirements of the EPA Energy Star and NYSERDA programs, Enterprise Green Communities, LEED, Passive House, ASHRAE, the NYC Energy Conservation Code, etc.
Review construction documents (including architectural, mechanical, electrical, and plumbing drawings and spec) and provide building analysis to ensure and enhance compliance with program requirements. Make recommendations for energy efficiency improvements and maximum sustainability.
Create pre and post construction energy models in conformance with program guidelines, utilizing building simulation software.
Act as sustainability Junior Project Manager from schematic phase through construction, reviewing submittals and related project documents to maintain project goals and program compliance.
Visit construction sites independently or with other AEA members and/or outside agents to engage in project monitoring, functional performance testing and verification, including technical assessments. Develop site reports to provide ongoing status and guidance on program compliance.
Work with AEA commissioning staff and provide guidance to development, design, and construction teams in the commissioning process and requirements. Act as liaison between project teams and the commissioning agent to ensure a smooth commissioning process and project completion.
Keep abreast of energy codes, standards, and new technologies.
Produce technical reports and project tracking documentation.

Qualifications

Qualifications/Skills:

B.A. or B.S. with a major in Engineering, Architecture, Energy Management, Environmental Sciences, or a related field.
Strong computer software, analytical, and computational skills.
Ability to read architectural, mechanical, plumbing, and electrical drawings.
Fluent English language verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to convey technical information to audiences of varying backgrounds.
Demonstrated interest in the principles of energy conservation and high-performance sustainable building design.
Good organizational skills with the ability to maintain attention to detail and exercise good independent judgment.
Ability to efficiently and effectively manage multiple projects and priorities within a team-oriented office environment.
Technical knowledge of energy efficiency standards, commissioning, green building standards and/or building science a plus.
Prior knowledge of energy modeling software (e.g., DOE-2, eQUEST, TREAT, or EA-Quip) a plus.
Familiarity with requirements of ASHRAE, NYCECC, Passive House, Enterprise Green Communities, and/or Energy Star a plus.
Accreditation or Certification as a CEM, MFBA, RA, PE, Passive House and/or LEED Professional a plus.

Physical Requirements:

An essential portion of the responsibilities and time of the Junior Project Manager, Energy & Sustainability will be performing field-based oversight, and testing and verification on active construction sites. The individual in this position must be able to bend, lift and carry up to 40 lbs. with other AEA team members in order to transport, set up and operate building testing and verification equipment; ascend and descend stairs and ladders; stand, walk and move about for various periods of time; handle exposures to summer and winter temperatures on open construction site; traverse rough surfaces, both inside and outside building properties; tolerate possible exposure to dust and/or fumes, dependent on phase of construction, in order to conduct building inspections (protective equipment will be provided).

Must be able to legally work in the country where this position is located. Visa sponsorship may be considered.
