R&D Engineer I (Sustainable Technologies)

Advanced Cooling Technologies (ACT) may be the perfect fit for you. ACT is seeking a Research & Development Engineer I to join their two-phase cooling and sustainable technologies group.

ACT R&D Engineers work on new technology development programs, with many of these programs culminating in new commercial products over the past two decades. As an R&D Engineer, ACT will look to you as a driver of internal technology development and rely on you to provide solutions to the most difficult technology challenges. You will work directly with government and commercial customers in the aerospace, defense, and energy sectors to solve their most difficult technical challenges.

Some of our current and recent projects include:

A passive thermal control system for small-scale biodigesters to improve year-round gas production.
NASA-funded variable conductance cold plate optimized for LEO satellites.
A sensor for measuring the real-time phase characteristics of two-phase refrigerant flows.
A concentrated solar desalination system, passively driven by a two-phase working fluid.
A novel CO₂ direct air capture technology that regenerates the CO₂ sorbent without the need for process heat.
A two-phase micro-electronics cooling package that improves significantly on the heat transfer rates of existing technologies.
Novel vapor chambers for improved heating and cooling of manned spacecraft CO₂ scrubbing systems.

As an R&D Engineer, you will typically work on several projects at any given time and will be responsible for all aspects of projects from start to finish. R&D Engineers develop skills across a wide range of duties ranging from concept ideation and proposal drafting to project management and technical engineering. This experience provides our R&D engineers with many opportunities for skill and career growth. Specific duties of this position include:

Develop new technical concepts to address customer problems.
Complete technology demonstration test programs in our state-of-the-art research laboratory.
Work with technicians to fabricate and test hardware solutions.
Develop analytical and numerical models to support prototype designs.
Draft CAD models and drawings to support prototype and experiment fabrication.
Manage all aspects of projects, including the schedule, financial performance, and reporting to the customer.
Brainstorm and write research proposals in response to competitive government funding opportunities.
Communicate with customers through presentations, written reports, teleconferences, etc.
Support IP development and draft patent applications.
Author research papers and present newly developed technologies and techniques at technical conferences.
Interface with product development and marketing teams to transition new technologies to production.

Specific qualifications for this R&D Engineering position include the following:

BS degree in Engineering or Science*
Less than 2 years of experience in a research engineering environment*
Curious, creative attitude, and willing to think outside the box
Good verbal and written communication skills

Self-driven attitude with the ability to quickly learn from mistakes.
A track record of problem-solving in engineering disciplines

Ability to occasionally travel for conferences and meetings with customers.
Hands-on skills and laboratory or fabrication work experience are preferred but not necessary.
US citizenship or permanent residency is preferred due to ITAR requirements on some programs.
