SUMMARY DESCRIPTION

The NYCLU seeks an experienced, innovative, and dynamic environmental justice expert who thrives in a collaborative, fast-paced organization and can skillfully implement and/or support the NYCLU interdepartmental approach to environmental justice and broad docket of civil rights and civil liberties issues.

This inaugural position requires a professional who has an extensive background in environmental justice work, with an emphasis on the intersections of environmental justice and racism. The environmental justice senior strategist must have experience with environmental justice principals, legislative advocacy and/or environmental justice litigation.

The environmental justice project senior strategist must take a community centered approach to ensure the Jemez Principles are not violated. This person will create, support, and implement environmental justice campaigns, programs, and initiatives to further with the NYCLU’s mission and strategic priorities and as part of the NYCLU’s interdisciplinary approach to culture change.

Specifically, the environmental justice project senior strategist will have experience with intersections of environmental justice and racial justice, infrastructure equity, impacts to education, Indigenous rights, criminal justice, law enforcement, privacy and technology, reproductive rights, and housing justice. The environmental justice project counsel will work closely with leaders and staff across the NYCLU—including the Education Policy Center, Legal, Policy and Field Departments, and our Regional Offices—to ensure that the NYCLU has an integrated, holistic approach to furthering the NYCLU mission.

ROLES & RESPONSIBILITIES

Plays an integral role in fostering the development of the Environmental Justice Project through the use of, among other tools, specific issue area spotting, expanding the Environmental Justice Docket, specifically in infrastructure equity, impacts on education, housing equity and Indigenous justice.
Develop campaign plans to support environmental justice strategic priorities, including coordinating, and collaborating across departments, regions and coalition partners.
Executes, organizes, strategizes, and leads public advocacy campaigns that mobilize NYCLU members and supporters to uphold environmentally just principles and defend civil liberties and civil rights.
Recognizes and recommends environmental justice issues for the NYCLU’s consideration
Conducts extensive public education, including presenting at events and representing the NYCLU in the media.
Contributes to environmental justice ligation, the development of policies, and education materials and workshops, including contributing to and/or editing blogs, public letters, reports, etc.
Contributes to the administrative management of the environmental justice project team.
Advises other staff on strategies and help them to implement those strategies.
Builds relationships with grassroots groups, communities, advocacy organizations, and government agencies, including representing the NYCLU at community events, coalition meetings, panels, and rallies.
Prepares and delivers testimony at public hearings.
Provide reports to the Director of Environmental Justice Project on a regular basis and as requested, and perform other duties as assigned
Actively supports the NYCLU’s internal and external commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion.

QUALIFICATIONS

The environmental justice senior strategist must have experience with environmental justice principals, legislative advocacy and/or environmental justice litigation.
Must have three (3) years of experience working directly on environmental justice issues with a preference for environmental racism, indigenous justice, transportation equity and land use.
Must have two (2) recent years of lobbying/advocacy experience furthering New York’s environmental justice goals and understand the political landscape
Must have at least one (1) year of community or grass tops organizing experience
Must have a master’s level of education, with a preference for Environmental or Social studies, preferred Juris Doctorate or L.L.M in environmental law
Must have experience drafting public comments, drafting and testifying at public hearings and other public forums as appropriate
Must be willing to travel throughout New York State
