The Engineer I position is the entry level of the Engineering classification hierarchy. Employees in the Engineer I position solve problems in engineering areas of specialization with close supervision. An Engineer I is expected to develop skills, and the ability to work with greater independence. An Engineer I has knowledge of fundamental concepts and procedures.

Duke Energy will offer relocation assistance if you are selected for the role and do not live within a reasonable commute of the work location. The physical work location for this position is Plainfield, Indiana. This position will require regular travel to Duke Energy’s largest power plant Gibson Station in Owensville, Indiana , Duke Energy's Edwardsport Integrated Gasification Combined Cycle plant, and all generation sites in Indiana and Kentucky with occasional support in other areas across the Duke Energy fleet.

POSITION SUMMARY:

This position is for the role of either a Chemical or Environmental Engineer for Duke Energy's Regulated & Renewable Energy (RRE) Team Central Operational Support & Oversight (COSO) Environmental Controls team and is to be physically located in the Midwest. This role will support resolution of technical issues and perform engineering design for a diverse mix of generation including coal, natural gas, hydro, and solar facilities. This role will provide engineering support, focusing on power plant systems and equipment at the generating stations within the region. The Engineer I provides consultation, technical support, inspections, testing and training to maintain or improve the technical integrity and safety of the equipment related to their area of expertise.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

Work with other Subject Matter Experts (SMEs) to develop, own and administer enterprise wastewater treatment programs (including guidelines, procedures, monitoring, optimization of processes, etc.).
Provide technical support, specifications, and consultation on bulk chemical purchases and contracts (including emergent water/water treatment, chemical service providers, etc.)
Provide technical support for Edwardsport Station systems, including various water/wastewater treatment process.
Conduct equipment inspections and provide detailed reports for the following:
- Water/wastewater treatment systems
- Environmental Control Systems
Emergent troubleshooting / root cause analysis of wastewater related station impacts (i.e., derates, equipment malfunctionsetc.).
Organize annual Users Group meetings for Wastewater Chemistry stakeholders. The intent of these meetings would be to gather equipment owners or team leads from each station, discuss O&M experiences, projects experiences and develop/convey enterprise "Best Practices."
Provide technical support and consultation on important issues relating to wastewater chemistry (including corrosion engineering, process engineering, chemistry monitoring systems, etc.).
Provide technical support on issues relating to Wastewater Chemistry for Regional Services Project teams, major project teams, and New Generation project teams. Support includes:
- Participation in technical meetings
- Design or Specification reviews
- Technical input on design considerations and water balances
Function as Wastewater Chemistry procurement interface, providing technical input for contracts and future purchases
Provide training to Station Stakeholders on Wastewater Chemistry topics

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS FOR THE ENGINEER LEVEL I POSITION:

High School/GED
Bachelor of Science degree in Engineering from an ABET accredited program
In lieu of Bachelor of Science degree, Master’s degree in Engineering

DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

Chemical Engineering degree from an ABET accredited program OR an Environmental Engineering degree from an ABET accredited program
Power Plant boiler/HRSG water chemistry, water/wastewater treatment, environmental control equipment maintenance and process experience; SCR. FGD, Precipitator, other equipment inspection experience
Registered Professional Engineer.
Advanced degree in engineering, science, or other related field of study.
Previous work experience providing engineering services for the utility industry.
Previous work experience at a power generation facility.
Proficient in principles of project management.
Capable of learning quickly, working independently and in a team environment.
Demonstrated ability to be flexible and adapt to constant changing of work needs and priorities.
Demonstrated experience showing familiarity and knowledge of AISC, ACI, ASCE, AWS, IBC, ASTM, ASME and other applicable codes and standards.
Demonstrated ability to effectively handle multiple assignments.
Ability to satisfactorily meet the physical job requirements including walking, bending, kneeling, crawling, pushing, pulling, and climbing ladders.

WORKING CONDITIONS:

Hybrid Mobility Classification – Work will be performed from both remote and onsite locations after the onboarding period. However, hybrid employees should live within a reasonable daily commute to a Duke Energy facility.

Performs work in an office and power plant environment
Required to observe and direct work in all areas of generation facilities which are power plant, utility environments operating 24 hours a day, 365 days a year
Power plant environment with exposure to hot and cold temperatures, humidity, noise, dust, fumes, confined spaces, and heights.
Working around pressurized, rotating, and energized equipment.
Required to climb ladders and stairs at various heights, enter vessels or equipment with limited access, walk, stoop, lift, bend, crawl and/or squat.
May be exposed to high stress situations
Required to be available for emergency response (callouts) as needed for outage or emergent problems.
Regular travel within the region
The hiring manager may elect to base this position at the Plainfield, Indiana offices or another Midwest generating facility (Edwardsport or Gibson) if the successful candidate is currently located at that facility.
Ability to pass a pre-employment background check with motor vehicle report check and drug test
